Cracking the Tyre code

5 Sep 2008

Tyres form a vital part of your vehicle. They're more than just a black mass of rolling rubber. Tyres are the only link that the rest of a car has with the road and vice versa. While the car puts down the power that is produced by the engine through the tyres, the tyres in turn offer grip and feedback through the suspension and steering to tell the driver exactly what's going on. A good car is lost in purpose without the right set of tyres. Figuring out which tyres to use isn't exactly rocket science thanks to laws that make it mandatory for tyre manufacturers to mould certain parameters of the tyre on the sidewalls.

Refer to the picture of the tyre sidewall. Here’s what the codes stand for:

205/50:
Stands for 205mm. This is the size of the nominal section width of your tyre in millimetres.

50:
Stands for 50%. This figure is known as the aspect ratio and is the height of the tyre’s sidewall as a percentage of the nominal section width

R15:
The R is for radial construction and 15 is the diameter of the tyre’s inner rim in inches.

86V:
86 is the load capacity and V represents the speed capacity.

Following is a detailed chart on load and speed indexes.

Speed Rating:

Tyre Speed Symbol
Tyre Speed Rating
km/h Mph
S 180 112
T 190 118
U 200 125
H 210 130
V 240 149
W (ZR) 270 149
Y (ZR) 300 186
ZR Above 240 Above 149

The table below gives the load index and the speed symbol with their corresponding values:

All Fiat Palio1.2 series are mounted on 165/80R13 tires. However the company has changed the tires for Palio 1.2 NV ELX to 175/65R14 tires.I have a Palio 1.2NV ELX with 175/65R14 tires and they are worn out and needs replacement. Can i use now 185/65R14 84H tires in place of 175/65R14 worn out tires? | Reply
